The New York Times has the loveliest article today. Christian Right Labors to Find ’08 Candidate. And on a Sunday, no less! I wouldn’t call that “liberal bias”, I’d call that just downright funny.
All the usual suspects* gathered at a conference to ask God who the new messiah to ban abortion, homosexuality and alternative energies will be.  Once upon a time, the godless clutched their upside down crucifixes during these meetings. Now, we smile and nod like we do at the socialists passing out The Daily Worker in Harvard Sq - sure, some people believe them but they’re not as big a threat as they once were.
The fact is the Christian Conservative base continues to shrink faster than a porn star without Viagra and is about as effective. In the last election, one-third of “white evangelicals” (and, yes, Dobson and company do make that distinction) voted Democrat. That’s no small feat. It’s not just the farcical War on Terror™ that turned the tide. Yes, Jack Abramoff did his part to screw up the political ponzi scheme CCs built up, but Ralph Reed put the nail in the coffin. There’s something about the former president of the Christian Coalition getting involved in massive graft and corruption that for some reason turns people off. Especially when he looks like Alfalfa.
Add to this, that many Americans claimed by the whole Jesus is Magic thing actually only thought that that gay people were icky.
Sadly, like Gore in 2000 and Kerry in 2004, Democrats could very well find a clever way to screw this up.
*Among the Christians attending, Grover Norquist stands out as a paragon of Christian values having once been quoted as saying
